Summary
The foundation was established in 1959 by Harry and Jeanette Weinberg in Owings Mills, Maryland. The foundation is based on Harry's bequest. In his will he left nearly a billion dollars for philanthropic causes.
The foundation's assets are estimated at $3 billion dollars and its donations per year reached an extent of $100 million dollars.
Background
Harry Weinberg was born in 1908 in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1912 his family immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland. When he was 12 years old he dropped out of school and started working in his father's car repair shop.
Since he was young Weinberg had a sense for business initiatives and one of his earliest ventures was selling souvenirs for celebrations at the end of World War I when he was only 11 years old.
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, he and his brother William would buy properties at depressed prices, fix them up, and resell them for a profit. He entered the transportation business when he bought the public transit company "Fifth Avenue Coach Company" and later in the Honolulu Rapid Transit company, which he sold in 1971.
In 1968 he moved to Hawaii and lived there for the rest of his life and managed his businesses from there.
In addition to his businesses he also made smart investments, through different properties management companies, including "Alexander & Baldwin", "Maui Land & Pineapple Company" and "Amfac".
Weinberg married Jeanette in 1932. She passed away in 1989, a year before him.
Since he passed away, the foundation's trustees continue his legacy by donating to charities and the community.
